Its been awhile since my last post on the collective thinking blog so I tried my best to find time to get something done for this months theme The seven deadly sins. I was aiming to show a mood change from one seven deadly sin to another nut couldn't find the time for that but I got around to doing a vanity test.

Just posting some work Ive done at my design for animation class taught by Stephen o Connor of Brown Bag Films.

This First image is from my trip to new grange. I really like the look of the passage ways. No one was allowed to enter this passage way so it has been virtually untouched for many years and it had that feeling about it.

This image was straight from the head and it shows, but I learned a lot about using masks in a painting and how hopeful it can be while painting digitally.

Just a few more models I have been working on. I might try and refine the Gun and trumpet a bit more or try some organic models before I move onto a character model next week. The 3d modelling class is going well. I always found modelling fun and relaxing. Its great to get back to it and learn more about Maya at the same time.

iAnimate Music Video

So this is a music video that we did at iAnimate awhile back, it is aside from our course work and done just for the fun of it. I had two short shots to work on in this and enjoyed them both. My shots are (00:54) Rex the dog jumping up and down and my second shot near the end (03:11) Denis the Dragon chasing Jane the girl.I am working on another student short now and will hopefully have some stuff to show for that soon enough.

maya modelling class one

I started the modelling and rigging class in Maya today. We covered the basics tools and went through what we will do over the coming classes. It seems to be all well organized and will hopefully have some nice work to show over the coming weeks. So here is my first ever model in Maya. I think it looks well for a start. I plan on doing more advance models now over the coming weeks and building a small portfolio. My lip sync is coming along well and will hopefully have it up soon. I will be starting the design for animation class on Wednesday so should have something to post then too. Busy Busy Busy

Just a quick sketch done in photoshop. I start my class next week for design in photoshop for animation as well as a class for rigging and modelling in maya both classes will be thought by Brown Bag Films. It should be fun I'm looking forward to the design class as its a well needed break from 3d thinking.

Just playing around in flash testing a more classical way of animating in flash. Someday I will produce an up to date Flash portfolio showing my current animation skills along with my flash skills..Im sure ill find the time...Id love to give it a go.

Ok so let me fill you in on what im doing at the moment. I am nearly finished the first half or Workshop three of iAnimate and will hopefully have a near finished lip sync up in the coming weeks to show people.

I am going to be working on the first iAnimate collaborative student short directed by Andrew Atteberry who is currently in Workshop 4 of iAnimate. I have been giving an important acting shot in the short and cant wait to get started on it.

If I can find some time I might work on Jason Ryans next Music video project due to start very soon, I am currently finishing up on his present Music video project.

I am doing some Logo designs up for creative energy and possibly for walking experiences.

Along side iAnimate I have applied for two courses set up by brown bag films and BCFE.
They are Modelling and Rigging in Maya and Design for animation in Photoshop. I want to further my knowledge of Maya as well as modelling and rigging so this is the perfect course for me and I am doing the design class as I think I would enjoy it, learn stuff and simply to take an evening off from animation.

I am also working as an asset creator for an E-training company so we are creating images for a web based training program in Flash, I also have to put a lot of it together using Adobe Captivate and now and again some sound editing in Adobe Sound Booth.

So BUSY BUSY BUSY but all to try help my goal of becoming a better animator and get my dream job of being an animator

Workshop three iAnimate

Just an update as to what I am doing. I am currently animating an acting/lip sync scene at iAnimate. So far I'm really happy with it. Its fun to really have time to dig in between the lines and really figure out the character. I am mainly working on the acting at the moment but will be moving onto the lip sync very soon. If anyone is interested in seeing it just drop me a line as we are being asked not to publish too much of our work in progress.
Also had a great time at the pegbar animation event and im looking forward to the next one.

I would just like to let people know that first I'm going on holiday for a week from the 4th to the 11th of September as a belated birthday present to myself. I am going to Portugal and will hopefully get some Surfing in and drawing done along side that.

We have been advised in college not to be putting up much work in progress of our animation at least to the public. So if anyone would like to see my work just let me know and I will send a password protected piece your way. I am just starting Workshop three of iAnimate which is focused on upper body acting and lip sync. I have been looking forward to this a lot and I cant wait to really dive into it. I will hopefully be working on another Music Video for Jason Ryan's band which will be directed by Jason himself so that will be fun.

I should be still doing life drawing with Niall Laverty that starts back in two weeks and the monthly Collective thinking post which the theme this month is BIRDS BIRDS BIRDS so I guess ill be drawing a bird. I might even be able to add some of my Flash Asset creations online soon so that will be another page on my blog.

This is an idea I had for the August Collective thinking. It is my first time taking part in the blog and Id like to say thanks for the invite.The theme for the month was Mythology with a modern day twist. I looked into Irish Myths and was interested in doing a piece on a banshee. So this is a modern day banshee in a bar screaming at her date when he starts to fall asleep.I wonder who is going to pass away that night. I also did an animatic of the short just for fun. I spent most of my time working on the background as I enjoyed doing that it still needs a lot of filler but its ok.

Some more life drawing I did last night at Nialls class. I was doing mainly semi blind drawings. I liked the gestural qualities to my blind studies and wanted to try and keep that in the semi blind drawings. I still have a lot to do to make up for lack of life drawing since I left college but this is a start anyway. I am enjoying the classes and it gets me away from a computer for awhile which is great.

A friend of mine Niall has been running Life drawing classes for awhile now but had a them at the weekend but this week changed it to a Tuesday so I said id go along. It has been two years since my last life drawing class so it was great to go back.

The class was focused on Blind drawings. It was great to do that as it helped me loosing up a lot. So here are a few images I produced I was doing images between 2 to 5 mins long all completely blind no mater how much I wanted to look back at my page.

This is my last assignment for workshop two of iAnimate. I am currently working on this and the music video for iAnimate so my shots are only at bloccking stage at the moment.

Background for pace animation

So here is something a bit out of the norm for me..I did up a 2d background in flash. My plan is do do up a few more and have them as the backgrounds for my 3d animation that I am doing for my ianimate assignments. I really enjoyed doing this and I hope to keep the rest of my backgrounds in a similar style..Depending on the character I am using for the assignment. I will be rendering out my animation and Ill probably compose them in after effects. The second image is just a quick test composite it flash just to see how its looking so far.

This is my progress reel of my work so far for iAnimate. I think I have come along way since week one from improving my body mechanics to learning Maya. I am putting it up early so if there are any suggestions I still have time to do minor fixes but I want to focus on my last assignments as its a few shots with two characters so I have a lot to do. There is a two week break between workshop two and three and thats when I plan on refining the shots and polishing.

Under my progress reel I have my show reel from when I started iAnimate just 12 weeks ago..Its gone by so quickly but I have learned so much. I know Workshop two aint over yet but I cant wait for Workshop three. In workshop three we get to work on an acting shot.

Sorry about the odd aspect ratio I really have to work out my render settings in Maya playblasts. So this is my weight lift asignment. I am trying to gather reference for this shot but its hard to find anything.I obviously wont find someone lifting a tank but its all about the scaled weight as he is a super hero so it could be like lifting a bag of sugar to him but thats not my target I still want to show that he stuggles to lift it. At the moment I think I need to work on the throw the most of all.

I have used a splocking technique. blocked it out in spline. This is my first pass and I am quite happy with it. I am going to play with the timing and the overlap next

So this is my blocking for my pace study. I have to work with the timing as he speeds up dramatically in one part but for my first time animating in Maya I am happy with my progress.I lost some of the weight changes while working on his feet so I need to work on getting that back in there. Also I swapped from stepped to spline to see what it was like and not the eyes will only stay fully closed or fully open..

I wanted to put a polish to this before I start iAnimate. Basically I should hopefully see my learning curve as I progress through the workshops. Id like to thank Andy Doyle of brown bag films for all of his advice on this piece and I think I have learned a lot from it, now I would like to put what I have learned into a shot from the beginning. Looking forward to ianimate for the time being I am trying to take in as many tutorials on Maya as I possibly can. I have the basics down but I like to know a bit more than that so that I am comfortable with the program.

I just got some great news for my career in animation. I have been accepted by Jason Ryan Supervising animator at Dreamworks to take part in his course http://ianimate.net/ . I have been put into workshop two so I get to skip the introduction classes and just go straight at it. I have to really brush up my knowledge of Maya now over the next month as it starts in may, so that I can hit the ground running. I cant wait to start now, looking forward to it so much. My goal is to really improve my skills as an animator focusing of 3d animation.

so I have been putting most my time into my first scene that I decided to animate for my animation class but I still like the second scene that I have been working on so today I splined it and tweaked a lil bit of it. It still needs a lot of work especially how my ideas for this scene are to bring in all the bosses staring down at him but im thinking of just having some type of silhouette characters for the bosses.

so finally got to my first pass there is still a lot of work to be done on it..I need to figure out a lot of problems with the character in the graph editor just certain keys dont seem to show up where one would think they would be so ill just keep digging around to find them. It seems to be in areas that have a control for them for ex. the Fingers and Eye brows..I found the fingers but it seems to be one key at a time for each bone so it might take some time and have not found the eyebrows yet. I also plan to tear back the mouth and block it in slowly.

This is just a splined version of my blocking can just start digging into the curve editor now.
As it stands I prefer the non splined version, this looks like I took a few steps backwards, so I am thinking only to spline a few things at a time, work on the timing and curve of that particular control and so on.

This character design is inspired by a sketch I did on my trip to the national art gallery during the week. I realised that I like to draw with sculptures as reference. It is almost like working with the best life drawing model who wont even blink. Next week I hope to get to the national history museum at some stage to sketch some more stuff.

Just wanted to do up a quick model of something so I modelled my memory stick that has survived college..it was a nice 8gb one I remember when I started college I had a 256mb one that probably cost just as much and we would be running from computer to computer transferring sections of stuff at a time.

Just animated a quick walk cycle kinda lifeless robotic walk my plan is now to do a few different ones adding life and character to them in different ways..Id like to see how far I can take the one walk cycle

This is my showreel from college. In the second piece I would just like to make clear that the rig,character model, Portals and some small props were not modelled by myself. I modelled and textured the room with some of the objects and I did all the animation shown in my showreel

This is how sc006 and sc007 went in my animatic but I am considering switching it for my altermative shot because it creates a laugh and the short film as a whole is not a comic piece. It would be great to get some feedback.

This is just a short piece that I have been thinking about doing lately to take my mind off college stuff.I probably wont get to animate it until after college but I want to have something prepared to work on just to keep me animating. Its something close to the heart..TEA.
Im thinking about how to do it at the moment. I mite do a mixture of 3D and 2D..

this is a clay model of my character, i wanted to see how he looked in 3d. it is my first time using clay in years and i think it turned out well...its fun to do so maybe with a bit more pactice and a larger scale it should be easier to work with.
